One of the best times to get a boudoir and glamour photography session is after a cosmetic surgery procedure. The photographs will be great way to celebrate the new you, but it will be obvious that you will have to have some resting period between your Botox and your photo shoot, for many health and aesthetic reasons.

When should I schedule my shoot with the photographer? We generally recommend you schedule it for 30-60 days post-op. Of corse, this depends on what kind of surgery you get. Something like Southlake Rhinoplasty Surgery will take about six weeks, where as a face lift will only take about four weeks to heal.Your surgeon can give you his recommendations on how long they feel your procedure takes to heal. Once your surgery is schedule, go ahead and schedule your session with your photographer. It adds to the excitement knowing that you have your session all ready to go.

Why so long after my surgery? Even after you look healed on the surface, there is often some swelling that lasts a few weeks longer. For example liposuction heals externally it about 2 weeks, but your body will still be slightly swollen for a period afterwards. Since we want your photos to look their best, we suggest the longer wait. Of course, other body contouring procedures like smartlipo have a shorter healing period of about a week, or tummy tuck is about six weeks. My surgery will leave some scars, how do you handle them? Depending on where the scars are and their size, there are a number of things we do. Others we can conceal with the poses and lights. And of course, we can always retouch anything that is not covered any other way. Your photographer will give you some suggestions on things that will work well during your shoot. Items that show off the changes will really help to make your photos special.

Backgrounds in Boudoir and Glamour Photography

Boudoir and Glamour photography focuses on the person in the photograph.  Usually these photos are design to evoke a sensual and sexy mood.  Still the selection of the background can have a huge impact on the resulting image.  

The chosen background should not over power the person in it.  After all, the goal is to flatter the person and make them stand out.  This can be done in a number of ways, each one has its benefits.

The simplest is to choose a solid background.  This can be black, white or any color in between.  Key here is to keep the background muted.  Neon green will most likely not be effective at keeping the focus on the person in front of it.  When choosing a color, a color wheel can be your friend.  It can help you select colors to contrast the clothes that are being worn, by selecting a color from the opposite side of the wheel.

Another way to keep the focus off the background is to shoot with a shallow depth of field, open that lens up –  2.8 is great I always say.  The wide open lens creates that softness in the image, while allowing you to keep the key portion in focus.  In general it is usually the eyes, but in glamour and boudoir it may be a hand on a strap of the lingerie.  The photographer’s artistic eye will guide the selection of the focal point of a given image, and in turn guide the viewer’s eye.

And of course good boudoir and glamour photography is all about lighting.  And lighting can be used very effectively to place the focus on the person and not the background.  Your eye is naturally drawn to the brightest part of the image, or in very bright images the darkest part is sometimes the focal area.  To see what is the focal point of an image based on light values, blur it until you can’t tell what it is.  Now look at it, and your eye will be drawn to something.  Sometimes I use Photoshop to do this, other times I just step back and squint my eyes. 

So by controlling how an image is lit, you can drive the focus of the viewer to the proper portion of the image.  Ideally you should keep your focus and light together, but rules can be broken. 

So why don’t I just shoot in studio on a solid background, since we are just trying to hide it anyway?  Because even a non-focal background can add value to an image.  For instance, if a woman is in a swimsuit I want to know why.  So I prefer there to be water to explain why she is the swimsuit.  Lingerie looks great in a bedroom, but maybe not as good in a garage (ok, who am I kidding – lingerie looks great everywhere, but you get the idea). 

Location boudoir and glamour provide the photographer a whole collection of choices of backgrounds.  They can be used to bring out the personality of the client.  How about a bubble bath, which can be shy and innocent, or sexy and sultry.  I will talk more about location boudoir and glamour photography in a future entry.

Boudoir photography is much more that taking pictures of scantily clad women. Boudoir and Glamour Photography – Be Careful

Boudoir photography is becoming very popular these days. It seems everyone is wants to have or wants to take boudoir photographs. Tasteful nudes, like these Snapchat nudes, have always been part of art as can be seen in classic sculpture and paintings. But what makes boudoir images artful and not trashy is the talent of a professional photographer.

Women will find that it is easy to find men who are willing to photograph them nude. Many of those men probably decide to watch teen sex to better understand female anatomy and enjoy themselves. We all seen the cliche photographer who is just after models. In the industry there are what are known as GWC’s – Guy’s with Cameras. Men who have a hobby of taking pictures of girls for their own personal pleasure, lack any real understanding of lighting, posing, composition or often even how really use their cameras.

So how does one find professional and not a GWC?

• A professional will have business license for starters – they pay sales tax.
• Many will be incorporated or LLC companies.
• They tend to belong to professional organizations such as PPA (Professional Photographers of America), WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International), ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers), NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals), EP (Editorial Photographers) to name a few.
• The have quality sample work, both on their website and in print.
• They have relationships with other professionals such as make-up artists and hair stylists.
• They often have a physical studio.
• They have business checks with a business name on them, although many photographers shoot under their names.
• Professionals accept credit cards.
• GWC’s will tell you that you have to come alone as a second person is a distraction and ruins the mood, etc.

But what if the photographer doesn’t have a studio, is that a red flag? That would be a caution, but not a red flag. Many professionals work out of home studios or on location. This is especially true for wedding photographers, but does apply to other areas too. A studio is a huge overhead and so much work is done on location today, that not having a studio does not label a photographer a GWC. So if there is no studio, just make sure you do your homework, which is the reason for this blog entry. I have a studio, but 80% of my business is shot outside the studio. This is why I share my studio with several other photographers.

When you contact them how do they respond. Are their responses professional? How do they answer the phone, do they give the company name? Request a meeting with the photographer. Do they give you a bad vibe? Do they show other samples that are of the quality you expect? Is it a professional presentation or just a handful of photos?

The photographer gave me a really nice business card, so he’s a professional right? Sad to say, but for less than $20 you can order a few hundred business cards, with whatever you want printed on them. A business card is probably the biggest scam to proving you are in business there is today.

What about a website, does that make them a pro? Once again, for a few dollars you can set-up a website. And nobody checks what is on a website, so they can say whatever they want. In fact some GWC’s actually steal photos from others to make them look better than they are. A good website is a good sign, but it doesn’t mean that you are getting a professional.

So in summary I strongly recommend you do your research when choosing a boudoir photographer, or any photographer. Using professional photographers will get you the type of quality images you deserve.
